Landmark office development creates 16 apprenticeships

Since construction started last year No8 First Street has provided workplace apprenticeships for 16 young people who, together with Carillion’s build team and its many sub-contractors, are working to deliver the 170,000 sq ft Grade A office scheme. The apprentices have provided support through the numerous contractors on the supply chain and have been working across a wide range of trades including joinery, steelwork, mechanical & electrical, brickwork, dry lining and cladding.

The apprentices have been working both direct with suppliers and through Carillion Training Services. The team was also able to take on an additional brickwork apprentice on a placement who hadn’t been able to complete his apprenticeship with his existing employer so was placed with Carillion’s bricklaying contractor enabling him to gain the necessary skills and experience to complete his apprenticeship.

Alongside the 16 project apprentices, Carillion Training Services and the project team at First Street have set up a new apprenticeship in General Construction Operations. The No8 compound and facilities have been used for training 5 new apprentices on this scheme who are now all out on placement to enable them to complete their qualification.

No8 First Street is being delivered in a joint venture between PATRIZIA UK and GMPF with Ask Real Estate undertaking the Development Management role.

Commenting on the apprenticeship roles Scott Roberts, Centre Manager (Manchester) at Carillion said: “Using No8 as a training centre has enabled Carillion Training Services to increase the opportunities for apprentices and for them to work alongside an experienced team on a live construction project. They have played an invaluable part in helping to build this great new city centre office scheme which is scheduled for completion in Autumn this year.”
