An ‘enchanting’ light installation is coming to First Street this month with the arrival of a group of life-sized Polar Bears.
The installation, named ‘Celebration’ has been created by local artist Lazerian and will be installed at Tony Wilson Place. The naming of the installation derives from the definition, ‘a group of polar bears, brought together as a community by good food.’
The First Street team commissioned Denton based artist, Liam Hopkins aka Lazerian, in October to create the 5m long sculptures. The largest polar bear will be 5m long, almost 2m wide and 2.5m tall with smaller sculptures surrounding. LED’s will be attached to each structure.
The custom-built sculptures will allow visitors to take in the ‘magical’ atmosphere of First Street thus creating a ‘Winter Wonderland’ in the heart of the city centre.
The inspiration for the piece comes from the animal’s characteristics. Polar Bears only tolerate others in proximity if there is a good food source nearby. First Street is also working to deliver net-zero commercial space, which polar bears and the melting of the ice caps have also become synonymous with.
First Street’s reputation for sustainability and quality F&B offer has driven the ethos of the installation and is an indication of the vision for the wider estate.
The installation will combine lighting, visuals, and wildlife, transforming First Street throughout December bringing a new and cultural approach to Christmas installations.
‘Celebration’ will launch 27th November in Tony Wilson Place. First Street’s F&B offerings will all be open throughout the Christmas period.
